International Club Celebrates El Dia de los Muertes
Most of us think of Thanksgiving as the celebration that follows Halloween; but many people in other countries, and some in ours, celebrate El Dia de los Muertes on November 1st. Our International Club held a celebration during activity period on Thursday in honor of the holiday.
Students decorated the room and prepared treats, like the traditional sugar skeletons, for the celebration--which some see as a little bit morbid. The history of the celebration is more uplifting than all of the dark images, though. It is believed that the souls of ancestors return to the earth one time each year. During this time, families get together for feasts in honor of relatives who have passed. They prepare feasts and celebrations around their deceased relatives' likes and preferences. Like Thanksgiving, it is an opportunity to share time and memories with one's family.
