Soccer Girls Pay Their Dues
The girls’ soccer team is in a slump. This is a bit of a role-reversal for the girls because for the past decade the team has enjoyed a spot among premier teams in the area. In fact, five years ago, as a non-league team, the girls were picking up games with teams like Owen Roberts from Pottstown, PA simply because there was little local competition.
Despite their losing record, Coach Marc Lovecchio and the girls are working through this slump. They’ve gone back to the basics. They use tennis balls in practice so they do a better job “passing the [soccer] ball to the other girls’ feet” during a game. The boys’ team continues to cheer them on from the sidelines; and the boys have even begun to sing to the girls during the games in an effort to keep their spirits up until they break their streak.
Lovecchio, who teaches the girls as much about life as about soccer, has taken this opportunity to reinforce his mantra with the girls: “In the end, it’s all about character.” With frustration levels high, the girls are certainly learning lessons about character. And as any team who has ever endured a slump knows, what the girls really need right now is a win; so check the schedule and join the boys on the sidelines for some cheering (and maybe even some singing).
